Exams are not a necessity for learning and enjoying music, and not all of my pupils will sit them. I do tend to cover most of the elements that would be necessary for them (in the form of sight-reading and scales appropriate for the student's level) so that the technical side is always covered if someone decides they'd like to work towards an exam.
For those who enjoy working towards that kind of goal, and the challenge that exams can provide, I use the ABRSM exam board. The exams are made up of four sections - scales and arpeggios, sight-reading, 3 pieces to play, and aural (listening) tests. I like to be sure that someone is playing comfortably at the grade level before preparing for an exam, so that the exam itself can be as stress-free as possible!
There are three exam sessions each year, spring, summer and winter, which allows for some flexibility in scheduling and preparing for exams.
Current ABRSM exam fees can be found at https://gb.abrsm.org/en/exam-booking/exam-dates-and-fees/
